Peace Thru Vandalism, When in Rome Do as The Vandals is a compilation album by the southern California punk rock band The Vandals. It was originally released in 1989 by Restless Records and later reissued Time Bomb Recordings, a record label founded by Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness. It is a CD re-release of the band's first EP, Peace thru Vandalism, and first LP, When in Rome Do as The Vandals, containing all of the tracks from both releases. The Restless version has the tracks from When In. When in Rome Do as The Vandals is the first album by the Huntington Beach punk rock band The Vandals, released in 1984 by National Trust Records, Its title is a play on the phrase When in Rome, do as the Romans do, as the Vandals was also the name of a Germanic tribe which had invaded the Roman Empire and helped lead to its destruction. The album's cover played on this theme by showing the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in a state of destruction. It was the band's last recording with vocalist Stevo. The Time Bomb release includes both Peace Through Vandalism and When in Rome Do as the Vandals. The Vandals of old put together two albums on one CD, Peace Through Vandalism and When In Rome Do As the Vandals. Seventeen tracks of psycho-punk with a touch of rockabilly. This is one of the rare bands that are together because there is nothing more fun to do then to play their music. When this album came out, way back in the early 80's, there was a resurgence of country music, and something called the cowboy lifestyle, thanks in large part to a forgotten movie called Urban Cowboy, starring none other than John Travolta. Coming to the point, the Vandals decided to have a little fun with contemporary pop culture. Shingo Japanese Remix Album. The Vandals. Hollywood Potato Chip. Live At The House Of Blues. These two albums are separate. For historical purposes, and for a measure of accuracy, Peace thru Vandalism is the first E.P. originally released on Epitaph Records. It is the second release by Epitaph. It features the classic Vandals line-up, featuring co-creator of the Vandals band "Stevo" R. JENSEN on Vocals. Steve "Human" or "Human T-Shirt" on Bass Guitar. Jan "Nils" Ackermann (co-founder of Vandals) on Guitar and Joe Escalante on drums. The album features original Vandals songs performed by a previous rhythm section featuring Stevo and Jan Nils Ackermann which are the tracks on this album (Peace thru Vandalism) with the exclusion of "Pirates Life" and "Anarchy Burger (hold the government)" which musically was written by the Vandals, with Stevo improvising the lyrics on the spot writing them in the booth immediately before recording them. This is an EP not an LP and features a cover of "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis (with Stevo's lyrical input). This album is a 4 out of 5 star album due to it's musical and lyrical innovation, which cemented an hardcore beach punk sound associated with Huntington Beach which was slightly different from previous bands Such as the Crowd. Much of the punk rock sounds associated with H.B. are captured on the posh boy records release "Beach BLVD" which is a compilation featuring various punk rock artists from Southern California and a definite "Must Have" if you like California Punk Rock. The second release, "when in rome do as the Vandals" is the Vandals actual 1st "Full Length" release/album, "Peace Thru Vandalism" being their first "EP". This album was released in 1985 around the same time as M.I.A.'s "Notes from the Underground" (I know, I purchased them both around the same time) also released on NATIONAL TRUST records (like the M.I.A. release). This album features a return of the Vandals co-creators Stevo Jensen on Vocals and turntables (scratching) (as heard on Lady killer) and Jan Nils Ackermann on Guitar as well as Joe Escalante on Drums. The Studio recording features Brent Turner on Bass (he was a studio musician) and Chalmer Lumary on backing Vocals (who filled in for shows and touring as the Bassist) this album I give 3 out of 5 Stars, mostly due to the Lyrical content and musical experimentation which brings different styles to the Vandals sound (moving away from the straightforward punk rock beach formula, which fits them better in my honest opinion). The Cover is excellent and a good reflection of what the Vandals were all about. The use of studio musicians and the lack of Human T-Shirts bass sound being featured on this first full-length tarnishes this albums potential to be a 5 star record release. The combination of both albums together using the original E.P. artwork is cheap and misleading and ruins the bands legacy. There is a band currently performing using the Vandals name, but does not feature the original line up with the exception of the drummer, who had nothing to do with songwriting on the band's first release outside of providing a beat and perhaps a little lyrical content on Pirate's life and various inane trivialities which matter little to the original bands legacy. Stevo Jensen passed away penniless and witnessed something he created become a mockery of it's former glory. R.I.P. Stevo. Your legacy will never be forgotten.
