Sea of Cowards arrived less than a year after the Dead Weather's debut, Horehound, an album that sounded like a bootleg of a 3 a. jam session - not a surprise, really, considering that the idea for the band came out of impromptu playing at Jack White's house. Its also unsurprising that the Dead Weather evolved quickly, given that the group went from releasing Horehound to touring to recording again almost nonstop. Sea of Cowards is an album for any fan of Jack White's previous projects. Where the White Stripes thrive on simplicity and the Raconteurs dominate blues-based rock, the Dead Weather contorts all standard perceptions of rock into their own distorted art form. Both of their albums are stellar, but if you are still not familiar with this band, Sea of Cowards is the perfect place to start. Similar Artists: The Kills, The White Stripes. Track Suggestion: Blue Blood Blues. If anyone thought the Dead Weather was going to be the project where Jack White let someone else take the lead, those notions end a minute and 38 seconds into Sea of Cowards opener Blue Blood Blues, when White tears into one of his most nonsensically badass couplets ever: Check your lips at the door, woman And shake your hips like battleships Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service It's fantastical tough-guy gibberish worthy of Bo Diddley, and it's the sort of line that only an extremely confident singer would ever attempt, let alone. Review Summary: A step up from Horehound, The Dead Weather offer us 70s hard rock twisted with blues and synth additions. Too many times, supergroups are disappointing. A good example was one of the three supergroups of last year, Chickenfoot. Their debut, Horehound, had shown potential, but on their sophomore release, Sea Of Cowards, that potential is used near it's full extent. The sound of this album is influenced by 70s hard rock, with additional blues influences and synth to keep things interesting. Songs where synth plays a vital role are The Difference Between Us, Gasoline, and Looking At The Invisible Man. With their second album in less than a year, the Dead Weather establish themselves as bona fide HEAVY with the monster of a record that is Sea of Cowards so either climb on the ship or be cast away in the turbulent waters that surround it. The Dead Weather, for the slow of uptake, are Alison Mosshart from the Kills, Jack White and some stray RaconteursGreenhornes. Synths are prominent in Dead Weather's dirty blues-funk sound, which would be more enjoyable without Mosshart's fifth-rate-Joplin growling. Jawbreaker is outstanding, White's riff within striking distance of Seven Nation Army. Now, someone give him Meg's phone number. He must have lost it
