The Letter is a song written by Wayne Carson that was first recorded by the American rock band The Box Tops in 1967. It was sung in a gruff blue-eyed soul style by Alex Chilton. The song was the group's first and biggest record chart hit, reaching number one in the United States and Canada. It was also an international success and reached the top ten in several other countries. Uh-huh Times Those happy times Times Down by the riverside Times We were making love and listening to the birdies sing. Uh-huh Now, I'm all alone Happy times are gone. They are best known for the hits The Letter, Cry Like a Baby, and Soul Deep and are considered a major blue-eyed soul group of the period. They performed a mixture of current soul music songs by artists such as James & Bobby Purify and Clifford Curry pop tunes such as A Whiter Shade of Pale by Keith Reid, Gary Brooker, and Matthew Fisher of Procol Harum and songs written by their producers, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, and Chips. It has since been revealed that most of the music on the Box Tops' records - with the exception of ironically The Letter - was done by session men. Even as early as the first album, this method cut both ways. It ensured a Southern soul professionalism that the young band likely couldn't have conjured on their own, but also worked against the development of a solid group identity, particularly as Alex Chilton was allowed to record very little of his own material.
