Album

Thembi is the seventh album by free-jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, released in 1971. Sanders moved away from the long, intense compositions of his solo albums and produced an album of shorter tracks. He and other musicians played a large variety of instruments. Sanders played tenor, alto, and soprano saxophone, bailophone African thumb piano, small percussion instruments, and a cow horn. Thembi is a 1971 album by free-jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. In this album, named after Sanders's son, the saxophonist moved away from the intense, lengthy, percussion-heavy jams he'd been pursuing in his solo work up to that point, and produced a record made up of shorter tracks, often with a more light and breezy feel. During the six selections, he and the other musicians play a huge variety of instruments - he alone plays tenor, alto and soprano sax, alto flute, fifes, bailophone African thumb piano, various small percussion instruments, and even a cow horn. Recorded with two different ensembles, Thembi was a departure from the slowly developing, side-long, mantra-like grooves Pharoah Sanders had been pursuing for most of his solo career. It's musically all over the map but, even if it lacks the same consistency of mood as many of Sanders' previous albums, it does offer an intriguingly wide range of relatively concise ideas, making it something of an anomaly in Sanders' prime period. It is strange that two of the most striking albums made by saxophonist Pharoah Sanders during the first flush of late 1960searly 1970s astral jazz have been so often overlooked in reissue series. Tauhid Impulse, 1967-the recording which launched astral jazz, the style Sanders fashioned alongside harpistpianist Alice Coltrane-and Thembi have been available only intermittently during the last 20 years. Thembi inhabits this territory over four of its six tracks, but steps out of it on the other two. I sold my version of this at auction and bought an original pressing instead.
Burgas
Don't buy this pressing. Yes the gatefold is beautiful, but there is considerable surface noise. The music is compressed and (as someone else pointed out) distorted. This may be less than half the price of a decent-condition original 1971 pressing, but it's still no bargain. Spend the money on an original.

Brand new copy.. still sounds like vg+ Poor repressing. Also my copy was warped and with a hard click in the first track of the face B. I compared the track Astral travelling to the one on my Irrepressible Impulses records and the one of this album sound 1/2 good of whaat the original sounds. I returned the item.
Geny
Gatefold sleeve is beautiful - heavyweight in the style of the original Impulse releases to a point. I am no audiophile but sound fine to me. Nice item
Malanim
Pretty bad pressing. A lot of distortion on side A. Sound quality apx. 5/10.
Fordredor
Not the greatest pressing. I've been looking for a reasonably priced clean original for a while to no avail. Elected to take a stab at this one when I saw it in Amoeba today. Some non fill issues and the lower frequencies seem a little muddy, even distorted, on side 1. Side 2 fairs better but it's a bit disappointing on the whole.

My copy is fine. No complaints. Astral Travelling sounds mighty fine...

Sounds great to my ears, although I have never listened to an original pressing. Nice cover too, waaaay better looking than the recent Journey In Satchinadanda repress (which imo looks like a Xerox)

I am picking this up this week, I will let you know.
