Maggot Sandwich, being from Pensacola in the state's panhandle, were often ignored by punks in other parts of the state, such as Miami, Tampa and Orlando. Not that they were no good -- it is just that they were geographically isolated from the Sunshine State's better-known scenes. No, Maggot Sandwich probably had more fans and played more shows in places like Alabama, Mississippi and New Orleans than, say, Ft. Lauderdale. But they were hard at work way up there, putting on shows, running the great KML record label, and, for a while, printing a zine."Get Off The Stage" is the band's pinnacle, their true calling card. Everything they did before led to this very good full length. I'd like to give "Get Off The Stage" a 4.5 as I don't feel it is quite a 5, but close. After this LP, the band was quiet for a while, changed style, released a breakneck 7" called, "Murder War," a sort of dull CD called, "Sleaze Factor" and then broke up.But here on "Get Off The Stage," they have been captured at their apex. Musically and lyrically, this is a bit like Dead Kennedys in that it is a little quirky and the lyrics are very pointed, very opinionated and humorous. "My Florida" and "Sex Sells" are a couple of my favorites. The guitar sound is a little thin, but the playing is great. The drummer really favors the closed hi-hat sound so you get a lot of "tsssshh, tsssssh, tsssssh." The bass riffs are bubbly and often memorable. The vocals range from histrionic to hysterical. One of the few punk LPs to come out of Florida in the 1980s and clearly one of the best.
i'm from pensacola, so i grew up seeing MS dozens of times from 1984-1993. i was at the release show for this album in 1987. this video, if i recall correctly is from that show, and the entire show was available as a VHS from KML:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZKJ--nuqDgsadly, the discography for MS here is short some releases. there's a coupla cassettes (one from 1985, and the later zero tolerance tape, can't recall the release date, but i think it was after the cd) not listed, among other things. talks and attempts to release a discography cd have been thrown around, but buzz zerk (original singer on the first unlisted cassette and 7") has been the reason why the very early stuff will never see the light of day again... a real pity. i was in talks a year ago with mike (vik kaos) to reissue get off the stage on cassette with comprehensive liner notes, but the masters for the lp are long gone, and it would have to be remastered off vinyl. if you're looking for a copy of that later zero tolerance tape, go here... there are two left.http://sistersinchrist.space/album/zero-tolerance/
I finally got this LP in 2016 after living in FL for years and years and never even seeing a copy. I tracked one down in Berlin and it's ridiculously good condition. I am stoked to hear about new Maggot Sandwich but the kmlkollective.com web page I can't get to load up. Pulls up some godaddy page. Anyways, I love the material I've heard and only hoped to be able to see you guys live even once while I was toiling down in Tampa. Thanks for the killer music though regardless. To reviewer Bill, yeah man I agree too - a truly unsung Florida release and to be honest unsung international quality release in my book.
Hi Bill ! Thanks for the props. You will be happy to know that the band has reformed and just released a killer 10 inch record with old faves plus a few new scathing tunes for all to enjoy. Nothing dull about this shit. So go buy one now at www.kmlkollective.com
